Simplicity is in the Mind of the Beholder

woman thinking Is simplicity more than just modern decor and eliminating distractions?

Whether you're a single mom renting an apartment, a college student living in a dorm, or a busy profession living in a large home you can't find time to take care of, take a moment to think about what simplicity means to you.

I asked several women what it meant to them:

  • One woman who lives in a spacious house with beautiful modern decor said "it would be having only a few rooms to take care of instead of an entire house and property."
  • A single mom told me "it would be having more room for the kids to play and where I could find someplace quiet."
  • One young woman in college said "it would be having more space to express myself and hang out with my friends."

It seems like everyone wants what they don't have, right?

So what's the difference between those three statements?

It's all about perception.

Each person has their own perception of what a simpler life would be. Oftentimes, we fail to see the beauty of simplicity that already exists in our own lives, preferring to look outside of ourselves in the search for it.

Our perceptions are molded by our beliefs. Our beliefs are molded by what we value. Our values are often molded by our past experiences and programming we received as we were growing up.

When we understand what we are placing the most value on presently, we can better understand our perceptions and deal with any negative feelings that may come up.

When I say it seems like everyone wants what they don't have, I am saying that most people have an imbalance between their values and their current life experience.

When you think about the word simplicity, what do you feel?

Listen to your body and mind for a moment and see if you can identify a characteristic feeling or thought associated with the word.

People have reported feelings ranging from tranquility and freedom to even guilt or failure, depending on their past.

People have reported thoughts ranging from "I feel that way when I my house is clean" to "Simplicity? Yeah, sure! Not in this house! That's something only rich people get to have. When you have a job and kids there's no such thing," or something in between.

If you are feeling one thing but really want to experience something else, there is an obvious imbalance between your values and what you are experiencing right now. Maybe you can't even identify what it is exactly that you feel. That's okay too. Most of our programming occurred when we were very young, and we usually learned subconsciously about what we should value by listening and watching the role models in our lives.

So how do we eliminate the imbalance? We need to approach it on the same level it was formed--our subconscious mind. And no, you don't necessarily need to be hypnotized to do that. It's actually very easy to bring your mind to a subconscious level.

One of the most powerful tools I've used is a technique called ZPoint. It's as easy as making an intention to release a negative feeling, choosing a word that you repeat to focus your mind on what you want to change, and speaking, hearing, or reading a series of statements to help guide you through the release. The entire process usually takes less than 15 minutes.
