Overcoming Fear, Inside Out

fearless

What about that 4-letter word...FEAR?

Overcoming fear doesn't have to be scary!

It's easy to make lasting change, if you do it from the Inside Out.

"Set aside a certain number of days, during which you shall be content with the scantiest and cheapest fare, with course and rough dress, saying to yourself the while:

'Is this the condition that I feared?'"
--Seneca

Fear can immobilize you in a constant state of procrastination and will continue to do so until you effectively deal with the fear. Want to become fearless? You'll get more effective and long-lasting results by finding and dealing with the underlying causes!

Timothy Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich, has an interesting approach for overcoming fear. He states,

"Conquering Fear = Defining Fear"

According to Tim, we first need to define the worst-case scenario that could happen if we tried to accomplish our goal. He recommends rating, on a scale from 1-10 (with 1 being nothing and 10 being permanently life-changing), the "temporary impact" of the worst-case scenario. He found that usually it ranges about 3 to 4. Now think of your best-case scenario and rate that according to the positive life-changing effect it would have. He found this usually rates about 9 or 10. This is to point out that you may be "risking an unlikely and temporary 3 or 4 for a probable and permanent 9 or 10." Do the math and start to feel the fear melt away...

Here is a summary of Tim Ferriss' approach to Conquering Fear:

  1. Define your nightmare, the absolute worst that could happen if you did what you are considering.
  2. What steps could you take to repair the damage or get things back on the upswing, even if temporarily?
  3. What are the outcomes or benefits, both temporary and permanent, of more probable scenarios?
  4. If you were fired from your job today, what would you do to get things under financial control?
  5. What are you putting off out of fear?
  6. What is it costing you--financially, emotionally, and physically--to postpone action?
  7. What are you waiting for?

I love Tim's approach...it's kind of like when you're a child and believe that there's a monster in your closet, and then your Dad comes in and turns on the light to show you that nothing's there and it really is safe. Don't let the fear monster occupy any more space in your mind. Face your fears, open the door, turn on the light, and take action!

This approach works mostly on the conscious fearful thoughts we have, but there is more to overcoming fear than what our conscious minds lead us to believe.

Unfortunately, we develop many of our fears on the subconscious or unsconscious level as children. Our role models (parents, teachers, religion, tv, etc.), had the good intention of protecting us by inducing fear, but they often took it too far by passing on to us their own unnecessary and useless fears.

Overcoming fear on the subconscious/unconscious level requires a different technique. You can learn simple ways to release uncomfortable feelings, such as fear, with the ZPoint Process or with EFT.
