Clear Office Clutter, Inside Out

Removing office clutter can seem like a daunting task. Whether your home office has it's own room or is located in your bedroom or in a closet, now is the time to get it organized once and for all!

The home office is usually a small but important space, and it will go through phases of being cluttered and decluttered as people in your home share this area.

The goal is to learn how to organize clutter so that it exists temporarily, such as when working on a project, and it is cleaned up after each person. Every member of the family can learn how to organize clutter by being on "clutter control". In this way, the home office can become and remain the clean, efficient, and productive place it was meant to be.

So, with your intentions for your ideal home office in hand, let's start a tried-and-true method to get rid of office clutter:

Ready...

Find a space in another room where you can put all of the items from your office temporarily as you clean, declutter, and simplify.

Set...

In this space, put labeled decluttering containers or boxes: love/use/keep, donate, sell, trash, recycle, etc.

Go...

  • First, start by disconnecting and removing all items off of and out of the desk, tables, bookshelves, etc.
  • Remove the desk and any other furniture (chairs, tables, bookshelves, lamps) into another room.
  • Remove all artwork, bulletin boards, or other items attached to the walls (if possible).
  • Remove any window treatments/shades/blinds, etc.
  • Anything left? Remove these items, if possible.

As you are moving items to the other room where the decluttering containers are located, consider what to do with each item:

Do you love it or does it inspire you?

Do you really use it?

Do you have more than one of the item, or can something else do the same job?

If you haven't used an item in a long time, put it in the appropriate container for later review and action.
